TOPIC: Violence and Society

PRESENTER: Jacqui Lewis, PhD.

Recent events in the news have re-invigorated the discussion of what causes people in authority to behave with excessive violence and what causes people who would never think of themselves as violent people to suddenly engage in violence when the opportunity presents itself (such as in a riot). Research into these issues suggests that violence can be triggered relatively easily in many people, even peace-loving people.

Our speaker will be Jacqui Lewis, PhD, who is a clinical psychologist and a full-time instructor at UCI in the Cognitive Sciences Department.

Dr. Lewis will discuss some of the psychological and environmental/societal factors that can lead to violent behavior in both ordinary citizens and people who are in trusted positions of authority. Our goal will be to use this information to think about effective prevention strategies that could be used to minimize or eliminate this type of violent behavior.

Format: This will be a remote event using Zoom. You may attend on a laptop, smart phone, tablet or other device connected to the internet. No charge. Guests are welcome.  To RSVP, contact Angie Mattson, who can send you the link.
